The Ward

The Captive Prince The Hostage Theon is a hostage of the Starks, taken after his father's rebellion. He is treated well but is never truly one of them. The Friendship Theon is close to Robb, but there is an underlying tension. He often mocks others and is seen as arrogant. The Hunt Theon accompanies Robb on a hunt and saves Bran from wildlings. He is praised but still feels like an outsider.

The Return to Pyke

The Choice The Proposal Theon suggests that Robb send him to Pyke to negotiate with his father for an alliance. Robb agrees. The Departure Theon leaves for the Iron Islands, but his loyalties are uncertain. He is tempted by the prospect of reclaiming his birthright. The Betrayal Theon will later betray Robb, but in this book, his fate is left open. His internal conflict is set up.
